Good tool - but none of the reviewers seem to get it the concept! January 8, 2010 Dave N (VA) 11 out of 11 found this review helpful
I have had this tool for only a few weeks, but the reviewers seems to have missed the mark, so I thought I'd weigh in. This tool is for someone who just wants to carry around the basics, i.e., the "crucial" tools. Most of the time all you need in life are plyers, knife, flat head or flat AND phillips screw driver. Mostly, that is all you get. If you want a bagillion tools in you multi tool, obviously, don't buy this one. If you want a multi tool that is relatively light, low profile, and easy to carry, but still has everything you need (and nothing you don't), buy this one. Some of the reviews have bashed the phillips head. It is fine for small jobs. If you are rebuilding your big-block Chevy 305, get a real damn screwdriver. The point of this tool is to help you out in a pinch, not be the only tool you own, and that it does well. Here is the other things these reviews miss. It is designed to have the profile and functionality of a pocket knife. I think of it as a "transformer"--a pocket knife that transforms into a multi tool. Multi tools are awkward and heavy and thus don't get carried much, or if they do, it is in a pouch. This one can be carried just like a pocket knife, clipped into your pocket. Its profile is a little bigger than you average pocket knife, but it is slight enough not be noticeable If you squint your eyes a little bit, it looks like a pocket knife, not a multi tool. OK, I am stretching it, but you get the point. By the way, just like a good pocket knife, with only one hand you can pull this out of your pocket and open the blade to a locked position with your thumb. Try doing that with a Leatherman! Bravo Gerber on incorporating your knife experience into the design. Gerber, a knife company, obviously wanted this thing to have the functional form of a pocket knife, with the added functionality of a paired down multi-tool. They succeeded. That is what sets this tool apart from all others. I would also note that it is well designed; for example the locks on each tool are appreciated and the tools when opened are in a position that makes them reltively easy to use (i.e., the screw drivers are not off-center like in a leatherman). Clearly, a lot of thought when into engineering it. In sum, this tool if for someone who wants symplicity: everything you need, nothing you don't, in a package that is light, unobtrusive, well designed, and easy to carry.
Excellent Multi-tool September 24, 2009 Artist_MG (USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This little baby really gets those small jobs done without hassle.
The Gerber Crucial features:
1. Blade with partial serration
2. Pliers with wire-cutters
3. Flat-head screwdriver
4. Phillips-head screwdriver
5. Carabiner clip with bottle-opener
The pliers handles fits your hand well, and all the tools work wonderfully. There's a lock, so the tools don't close on you. Great item for campers, travellers and anyone on the go. The product is designed efficiently and will make an excellent addition to your tools. I highly recommend the Gerber Crucial Multi-tool. Love the green handle too because it's easy to find. Check it out.
VERY nice tool! September 24, 2009 Drew Mc (NYC) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Not much to say, knife, philips and flat screwdrivers and a nice set of pliers all in a colorful and compact package, yep, that'll do it. If I could carry just one tool with me into the woods, the aptly named 'Crucial Tool' would be at, or at least near the top of my list.
I have personally always preferred Gerbers over Leatherman tools, and this one doesn't disappoint, so... Go For It!

Excellent compact tool September 21, 2009 J. S. Green I find this multipurpose tool to be very good. The device is very sturdy, and therefore a bit heavier than one would expect for the size. Everything snaps in and out nicely, and it seems very well constructed
The outside is a handsome shade of green and black. there is a convenient clip that could be used for belt or boot. Opening both sides reveals the pliers, which also have a cutting area that would clip small wires, and a serrated interior that will help when holding items. The end is flat and almost needle nosed. I found the handle to be quite comfortable.
The black side has only the two screw drivers, one flat and one Phillips, and herein is the only drawback to the entire device - the Phillips head is flat, not four sided, so one would have to use the thinner two sides to work 1/2 of a Phillips screw. I realize that they did this so that the knife could be thinner, but it isn't as effective as a full four head screwdriver.
While listing the screwdrivers, I should mention an interesting feature of the device. All blades lock, and they use a simple metal piece that moves over (left or right) to lock in the blades. To unlock, simply move the locking metal piece back. It took a minute to figure out, since I'm used to spring locks, but this is simpler, very effective, and has no spring to wear out.
The green side has only two items. The first is the main blade, 2.5" long. The interesting thing is that it has very little point - the end is flat rather than pointed. There are serrations on the first 1/2 of the blade, and it is very sharp, as would be expected of Gerber. It has a cool look, and I think that there is sufficient "point" to work most anything that might be needed. The blade has a convenient black triangle to help open it, and the same locking mechanism that has to be pushed to the side to close.
The other item is really unique - it is a carabiner, that can be used to snap the device to your belt loop, or backpack, or whatever. Very useful. The carabiner does not lock, but that is not an issue.
To summarize, this device does not have all the gadgets of a leatherman, probably the gold standard in multifunction knives, but the designers obviously knew that, and designed the knife to have just what most people would use often - the knife, pliers, and screwdrivers. If that meets your need, then this device is an excellent choice.
Good size for me October 6, 2009 TropicalMinnesota The Gerber Crucial fits my hand very nicely. It is comfortable when carrying and not too big in my pocket. It has the basic functions - it won't change a tire or replace a good set of tools, but it has the functions that I commonly need without so many extras that it takes up half my suitcase or glove compartment. The only thing that I don't like is the flat Phillip's screwdriver. I would prefer they sacrificed a little more space and made a full, round blade.
This item feels strong and sturdy, but at 5.1 oz. (on my kitchen scale) is not overly heavy. I get the impression that I can actually use the knife blade on more than cheese without it breaking.
One very important feature is that the blades lock when they are opened. I have had numerous Swiss Army knives come dangerously close to slamming shut on my fingers and insist on this feature. I also have broken the knife blades on several Swiss Army knives.
This will become my new travel "just in case" piece as it has the features I commonly need without the bulk of features that I not only never use but usually can't even identify. It will replace the Leatherman Skeleton CX that I liked, but whose Phillips screwdriver tips I kept losing (and then I eventually misplaced the whole tool). It is a little shorter than the Skeleton, about the same weight, and has everything I used. And it looks good, which is not a requirement for me but is always a plus.
