5 out of 5 stars Nice little knife sharpener   July 5, 2007

I read about the SCARY SHARP method and wanted a compact knife angle guide and this was perfect for small knives. Was never able to get it this sharp (able to shave without pain.)

4 out of 5 stars Not bad   July 11, 2009

This item is a pain to use. While the videos online show it as quick and easy, it requires three hands and a screwdriver to attach to the knife. Once the equipment is attached, the alignment guides are worthless. I used a standard sized whetstone, (7''x3''x2'' LxWxD), and the guide did not allow for the right percentage. Even at the lowest setting, it didn't get a low enough angle for the blade and the guide itself got in the way of providing a nice smooth slide across the stone. Maybe if the stone was higher up off the ground it would have worked better.

I am not impressed with the guide thus far, but will work with it some more. Might work better with DMT's stones.

4 out of 5 stars Great sharpener for the price   June 22, 2010
Thomas A. Russo (NJ)
I had no problem assembling the device; nor did I have a problem
using the knife clamp. Was very straightforward.
I used a not very sharp kitchen knife and set it to a 25 degree
angle (covered in the instructions). It took more than 5 or 6 swipes,
more like 15 or 20, but using a coarse stone the knife became very sharp.

Using a fine and extra fine stone I produced an edge that shaves hair off
my arms in just a few minutes. The big advantage is that the guide arms
guarantee an even edge on both sides which is the trick to sharp edges.
If you use a stone much thicker than that shown in the instructions you have to
compensate for the difference.

If you are looking for a scary sharp edge, you can sharpen your knife at a
lower angle (10 or 15 degrees) and then use an even finer stone. After
which you should hone the edge on a piece of leather or kraft paper. I have
done so and you can really get a razor sharp edge.

The only reason that I downgraded it to 4 stars is that it is somewhat flimsy.
With care it will last a long time, but I can see that aggressive use will
eventually break the guide arms.

2 out of 5 stars Aligner Guide/Blade Clamp   July 27, 2010

Although I love DMT products & have all of their Diamond Diafold stones & a ceramic sharpening stick, I am extremely diappointed with this product. Although a great concept, the actual product is very cheaply made & it broke when clamping my first heavy blade (Navy Seal Knife)the angle settings are not marked with numbers, so every time you use it you have refer back to the written instructions to determine which markings refer to what degree angles you are setting. Making it out of metal would be a big improvement. I would not recommend this product.

1 out of 5 stars Broke during first use   April 6, 2010
Adam V. Floyd (Austin, TX United States)
This is piece of junk. It broke the first time I used it. The guide rods snap into place by rotating them 90 degrees into a rentention pin. The pin is a molded piece of plastic a few milimeters in diameter. One of them broke off while adjusting on the rods. The other broke off during use. It lasted a whopping 10 minutes before being thrown out.
